About Supervision

I am a qualified and experienced supervisor with nearly thirty years of providing clinical support to practitioners ranging from complete novices to highly experienced counsellors. The counsellors I have worked with have come from a variety of work places NHS to the not for profit sector and private practice. I am familiar with working integratively and I am competent and confident in the main disciplines of psychodynamic, person centred and systemic theory.
During supervision client material is reviewed and explored. I am interested in why a particular piece of material was chosen and what meaning it has for the counsellor or therapist. The space is used to reflect upon the work being done, the interventions made and the meaning of the interactions between client and counsellor. I also encourage exploration and examination of the ways in which the work impacts upon the counsellor and how in turn it may be reflected in our relationship.
In all I will also bear in mind the ethical considerations and boundaries as advised by BACP.
A significant aspect of my work is to encourage, support and mentor those in training or newly qualified to find their "voice" . Novice counsellors are usually steeped in the theory and conventions of their counselling course and whilst this provides a good foundation I like to help a counsellor grow in confidence in their own way of working that is creative and authentic and moves away from the formulaic methods of counselling whilst still adhereing to best practice.
I will encourage, and draw upon a supervisees existing experience both clinically and from their own life to enhance and deepen their practice.
I enjoy supervising as I think there is much to be gained on both sides. I like to think that my supervisory skills and experience can be put to good use to support, challenge and deepen another's practice.
